Ketamine was developed in the 1960s and initial widespread use was in the Vietnam war as an anesthetic. It has continued to be used throughout the world in operating rooms and in the past became a popular club drug for its mind-altering properties with a brief hallucinogenic and euphoric effect that can last one to two hours.
However, in the past several decades research has found that ketamine has anti-depressive properties and can be incorporated into the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Although most psychiatric treatments with ketamine remain as an off-label use there continues to be significant growth in this field and the future is very promising.

I've just finished 6 sessions of Ketamine treatments for panic disorder, depression and PTSD and I feel Cured! I got panic disorder 25 years ago and hadn't been able to... read more get in a car without a benzo if I had to go anywhere out of my routine.
I've been able to drive/be driven anywhere-go camping, drive in traffic, even near miss when the freeway stopped suddenly and ZERO panic. I can now drive or be driven to Roseville, on camping trips- anywhere! It's like before I had my first attack - the car is not a stressor for me any more. Even better was the PTSD and depression relief which were immediate. I got improvements after each session. I was doing so well I wasn't even sure I needed my last appointment, but I wanted to see how good my mental health can get.
After the PTSD incident I used to be limited in my ability to work. Id hit a wall of mental fatigue that started with loss of motor control and if I kept pushing to work longer id eventually snap. At best id spend an hour or more on something that should take 10 minutes. Now I can work as long as I ever did- joyfully.
I see more beauty in life, as I did when I was younger. I got everything id hopes to get and more. While I believed this was the thing that would finally work, Id have been happy with only the depression and PTSD relief.
I can't explain how amazing it is after 25 years of feeling terrified if I had to go anywhere - or take a - Clonazepam or two to struggle through any car trip. I can be the person I was before - I always used to enjoy driving and was up for any fun road trip. I'm no longer dependent on waiting to make sure I am okay to leave. Normally id have been so worked up (say about a camping trip) that id take a pill and wait to calm down before we left. We just wouldn't leave until I was okay. Now as soon as I'm packed - I'm ready!
It's given me my life back!
Ketamine is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptor antagonist and FDA-approved anesthetic. Existing literature suggests that glutamate levels and NMDA receptor mRNA expression are abnormal in patients with major depressive disorder and bipolar affective disorder, and long-term antidepressant treatment reduces NMDA receptor mRNA transcription.
These findings led to the experimental use of ketamine for treatment of depression. Results of early studies of ketamine’s use as an antidepressant in humans were promising.

Ketamine for depression may be administered any number of ways – orally, sublingually, intranasally & intramuscularly. Because of the unpredictability of response in these other routes of administration, however, intravenous ketamine infusions have emerged as the preferred route of administration. Also, the overwhelming majority of research and scientific studies about ketamine for depression and other psychiatric disorders have been performed using intravenous ketamine.
We recommend 6 infusions over three to four weeks which are what studies have been based on. Our dosing ranges from 0.5mg/kg to 0.7mg/kg and occasionally 1mg/kg and the infusion occurs over 45 to 60 minutes with continuous monitoring.
Ketamine is a FDA approved anesthetic agent originally developed in 1962. It has been used primarily as an induction agent for general anesthesia in surgery for children, adults, and animals. Ketamine has a remarkable safety track record, hence its use in the pediatric population. Recently, it has been discovered that ketamine can be highly effective in treating depression, PTSD, Fibromyalgia, and other conditions. Learn More
The infusion itself takes about 1 hour, but there are activities that occur before and after the infusion. The infusion is administered under the direction and supervision of an anesthesiologist. Patients receiving a Ketamine infusion should plan on being at the clinic for about 90 minutes per infusion.
The low doses of ketamine used in therapy, especially administered in a medically supervised setting, eliminate virtually all potential for addiction or abuse. For the duration of a ketamine infusion, blood pressure and heart rate may increase – therefore patients with uncontrolled blood pressure, unstable heart disease, untreated thyroid disease should not use ketamine. People with active substance abuse, active psychosis, or patients who are currently experiencing the manic phase of bipolar disease also should not use ketamine treatments. Ketamine is contraindicated during pregnancy. Patients undergoing treatments are monitored closely to ensure safety during the acute course
A direct referral from a psychiatrist is not required. While a referral from any mental health care provider is encouraged, an initial phone or office consultation with one of our doctors can determine if you are a good candidate for ketamine therapy. We provide this initial consultation free of charge
