What Is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Talk therapy is an excellent tool for many patients who are dealing with mental health issues.  However, some patients no matter the amount of time invested are unable to obtain any benefit. In this patient population; KAP maybe beneficial.

KAP has been used for patients suffering from a variety of problems—relationship and existential issues including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Bipolar I and II depressive phases, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychological reactions to physical illness, personality disorders, life-threatening illnesses, and substance use co-occurring with a primary psychiatric disorder. Ketamine is not a stand-alone medicine fitting all possibilities.

KAP is mental health treatment method that involves using ketamine’s dis-associative (dream like state) and pain-relieving properties to help individuals work through various mental and emotional challenges with a licensed therapist.

At Klearmind we take pride in evaluating your specific needs and recommending appropriate dosing with therapy that has shown to be more beneficial than patients completing oral ketamine in isolation without therapy.  You will meet with a physician and complete a thorough intake prior to beginning your treatment if you are a candidate.  Recent study has shown benefits with KAP.

Your therapist can always reach out to us if they are not partnered with us for a treatment plan.

Patient Testimonials

"I'm so happy that I found Klearmind. My first Ketamine infusion was in July of 2021 (a year and a half ago now). This has been an incredible experience. The staff that I have talked with and worked with, Aman, Shane, Dr. Heyer, make me feel completely comfortable and cared for. They go well above and beyond to cater to my needs. They are amazing! Their pricing was lower than every other place I talked with and they made it easy and kept it simple, which is important when dealing with anxiety. Every question I could think of was openly and thoroughly answered. I'm 68 years old and have struggled my entire life with anxiety, have been having huge panic attacks since turning 50. I walked out of my very first treatment feeling a relief from much of my anxiety, and it has never returned to the level that it was before that day."
"The ketamine infusions I've received at Klearmind have not only changed my life, but saved my life. After having treatment resistant depression and suffering from ideation almost daily for the last year I knew I needed to do something or I risked ending up another statistic. The staff here has been amazing at making me feel safe and calm heading into my treatments. They educate you on the process of your ketamine infusion and how the medication works to change the structure of your brain. I've only completed 4 out of 6 infusions and this has already been the most deeply profound, healing experience of my life. I've been able to integrate things and heal from traumas that I wasn't able to internalize after 7 years of working with a therapist. I will say that I believe that the 7 years of therapy prior to treatment have allowed me to fully understand what this medication has been helping me work through."
"I write this in tears because for the first time in years I feel relief and hope for my future. I’ve struggled with major depression and PTSD from trauma and abuse. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on therapy over 20 years, been prescribed thousands of pills, to end up either feelings numb or “just surviving.” I had my 6th ketamine treatment today and the sky just seemed brighter and the future seems to have so much potential. The ketamine therapy works. But the most crucially aspect in ketamine therapy is your mindset and SETTING. As someone who has been abused, safety is crucial for me. The doctors always made me feel safe and cared for. The follow up was fabulous. They asked questions about my other medical conditions and treated me as a whole person. I had considered going with a different ketamine clinic but ended up going with KlearMind because of the vibe I got from my initial consultation and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. Thank you Dr. Heyer, you are an angel walking on Earth."

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) Treatment FAQs

KAP is another treatment modality that can aid with psychiatric disorders in conjunction with therapy by licensed and experienced therapists.

The medication will be in the form of a lozenge (rarely in another form) that dissolves under the tongue and takes about 10 minutes to become effective.

Patients will start to feel the dissociative effects for approximately 45 minutes or so, with the therapist monitoring, patients can explore issues at hand.

Most common side effects are headache and nausea which is rare for oral ketamine.  Zofran can be prescribed for nausea.

There are several but most common are pregnancy, poor controlled blood pressure, and previous head injuries leading to increase intracranial pressure.  Further patients on multiple controlled medications are considered high risk and this is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  We do not prescribe to patients under 18 years of age or outside the state of California.

The initial cost of $325 includes consultation with a board-certified physician and a prescription for Oral Ketamine dosing for 6 sessions.

Refills are $150 and include Oral Ketamine dosing for 4 sessions.

Yes, our therapist are certified/licensed by their specialty and in good professional standing.  All our therapist have completed an accredited psychedelic-informed training in ketamine.
