Q & A – IV Therapy for Pregnancy

Get Relief with the Premier Choice in Ketamine Therapy & IV Hydration in Sacramento and Roseville.

1) What does a typical pregnant patient receive for treatment?

Pregnant patients usually receive plain IV fluids.  They can receive normal saline with anti-nausea medication (zofran).  Tylenol is also safe for pregnancy but rarely used.

2) Clinically, what would a medical professional recommend for a pregnant woman?

There are three stages to pregnancy:
  • First Trimester: Conception to 12 weeks
  • Second Trimester: 13 to 27 weeks
  • Third trimester: 28 to 40 weeks
Generally as one progresses with their pregnancy the nausea/vomiting drops significantly.  However it can persist throughout the pregnancy. 70-80% of pregnant women experience “morning sickness” or nausea/vomiting.  Symptoms are worse with twins or more babies.

During the first trimester is when most women experience morning sickness and generally the treatment is IV fluids and anti-nausea medication which are all safe during this period in pregnancy.  As anything in medicine there is a limit to how often one would come in for hydration; if a patient is experiencing severe nausea/vomiting without any ability to eat/drink that would require the attention of an emergency room or hospital.  Severe vomiting can lead to electrolyte imbalances that need to be checked via blood work prior to proceeding.  This is a rare case.  Most women will improve with a single infusion and may rarely need one a week or two down the road.

Although nausea and vomiting are common and often harmless medical attention may be needed in severe cases.

Excessive vomiting during pregnancy is called hyperemesis gravidarum, which may cause severe loss of fluids and electrolytes from the body leading to a loss of more than 5 percent of the woman’s pre-pregnancy weight.

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum affects about 3 percent of all pregnancies.
  • It needs urgent hospitalization for proper management.
  • You must contact your doctor if nausea and vomiting interfere with your work or daily routine.

You must contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive vomiting
  • Severe nausea perturbing intake of foods
  • Decreased urine frequency and amount
  • Passing dark-colored urine
  • Confusion, dizziness, or fainting episodes
  • Difficulty having fluid or eating anything
  • Weight loss
  • Severe headache
  • Muscle spasms or cramps
  • An unpleasant fruity odor in the mouth or sweat

3) What problem(s) are pregnant women seeking to resolve with IV therapy?

Complaint regarding nausea/vomiting and inability to keep food/liquids down.  Initial single infusion can usually reduce this significantly improving other symptoms associated with nausea (headaches, tiredness, fatigue etc).

4) What else should expecting mothers know when researching options for supporting our experience with pregnancy?

As physicians and clinicians at Klearmind, we do appropriate history and examination prior to proceeding. We will spend time speaking with patients regarding how long they have been vomiting, how often and if they have been able to eat/drink anything.  In addition, we conduct further review of general health.  Complicated pregnancies (multiple, history or prior complications with pregnancy) are recommended to reach out to their primary care physician or emergency room.
